Mission Impossible: "DVD" VS. "HD DVD AND BLU-RAY"?

Posted by Stephane Dion

Mission_impossible_iiiParamount Home Entertainment plans to launch their hit movie “Mission: Impossible III” on three DVD formats.

The company plans to release the movie on HD DVD, Blu-Ray and regular DVD discs on the same day. The launch is currently schedule to take place on October 30 this year. That reminds us that the war is not about "HD DVD vs. Blu-ray" but "HD DVD and Blu-ray vs. DVD". Serveys shows that consumers will be confused with the two new formats but in fact they will probably be even more confused when it's time to decide if they stay with the DVD format or one of the two high definition formats. Especially since the DVD format will be around for many years from now.

Mission Impossible III would make this movie the first one to be available on all these three formats. Tom Adams, president of Adams Media Retailing spoke on this new development: “This is certainly a significant milestone in the launch of the high-def formats. It’s clearly way too soon to know which format is going to prevail, and it may be years. So I think we’ll see a lot more dual-format releases, at least in the short term. The interesting moment will be if we see that from somebody besides Paramount and Warner Home Video, the only two studios that have announced support for both formats.”
