Blu-ray Sales Surpasses HD DVD Sales
Nielsen VideoScan releases HD sales figures that gives the Blu-ray camp a 2 to 1 margin over the HD DVD camp. Based on retail registers and some websites, the analysis was done in the second week of January 2007.
Even more important, Blu-ray has almost closed the gap in total sales since the inception of the technologies. The gap is now at 7% from 14% and if the trend continues, Blu-Ray will overtake HD DVD in a few weeks.
Nielsen also said that the most popular Blu-Ray movies were Crank and Black Hawk Down. Batman Returns and MI3 were the most popular HD DVD movies.
The introduction of the PS3 with a built-in Blu-ray player is probably a key factor in this strong coming back from Blu-ray. The consecutives Blu-ray movies announcements made during the same week at the CES 2007 in Vegas is probably also another key factor.
