Japan Gets Blu-ray/DVD Hybrid Disc.

Posted by Andy Boxall

Bludvd_hybrid_2We saw HD-DVD/DVD dual format discs prior to the death of the format, however the dual format Blu-ray disc which reached prototype stage never made it on to store shelves.  Since then Infiniti Storage and Co-Tv, both Japanese companies, have improved the technology to the point it's ready for public use.

Currently with the BDA and the DVD Forum for approval, a Japanese television drama program is set to be the format's debut feature and will be spread across four discs, one side offering a single layer 25GB Blu-ray and the other a dual layer 8.7GB DVD.  A disc with a dual layer Blu ray and single layer DVD is also said to have been created.

It was back in 2004 that JVC pioneered this technology, which uses three special layers allowing either a red or blue laser to pass through in order to read their own specific data.  Currently there's no information this dual format disc will make it out of Japan.
