Apple iTunes 8.2 Hints at Mac Blu-ray
There may not be many actual facts in the latest Apple rumour, but then, is that anything different to normal? The Cupertino-based manufacturer is hardly known for letting the proverbial cat out of the bag early, so once more we're left to speculate on what the news could mean. The news in question is how the latest build of iTunes - numbered 8.2 - makes reference to Blu-ray, something it - and Apple - has not done before.
Apple has commented previously that Blu-ray was expensive and complicated to license on their equipment and they would wait and see what happened in the market before going any further. This was last year and as Blu-ray has continued to grow, could this mean Apple are set to introduce Blu-ray to certain new machines?
To clarify exactly what the iTunes blurb means, you must read the continued small print. It's actually Gracenote who do the mentioning rather than Apple, but Gracenote provide the track details for each CD or DVD you place in the drive, so it's not a stretch to imagine at least one model will gain a Blu-ray drive sometime soon.
The next iTunes release should be in June, either at or shortly after the WWDC 2009 conference, where all sorts of new hardware and software are expected to make their debut. Could a Blu-ray equipped MacBook Pro be amongst them?

Apple has made it clear they are focusing on digital downloads rather than physical drives.
There are no plans for an Apple native BluRay player.
The addition to iTunes is to read the digital copy most BluRay discs come with.
