Lucky Few Invited to Try Oppo's BDP-83 Blu-ray
Oppo are a brand well-known for producing high quality DVD players at reasonable prices, with plenty of features and format support. Initially, like many, the company decided not to enter the Blu-ray market until its survival was assured and once this happened, Oppo began to make plans for their first unit.
After the BDP-83 made a brief appearance at the CEDIA show last last year, Oppo contacted 50 potential customers who had signed up for their Early Adopters Program and were given the player to 'beta' test it. Later, another 300 people got to try out the BDP-83 and now, Oppo are inviting what is believed to be the final set of testers to purchase a unit before it heads out on to the market.
The Oppo BDP-83 is set to retail at $599 and has a rather impressive spec sheet including BD-Live and Bonus View, DVD-Audio and SACD support, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD decoding, 7.1 analogue audio output, two USB ports and plenty of video tweaks too.
Have you been asked if you want one of these final units, or have you got one already? Let us know what you think as despite the higher than expected cost, we're hoping the Oppo BDP-83 is going to something special!

As a huge fan of milti-channel SACD, I've been waiting quite a while for this player to be released. I have an older, but still quite good, Parasound surround processor that has only one set of 5.1 analog inputs so I really need a Blu Ray player that will play SACD's in surround as well. The fact that the BDP-83 will also play DVD Audio is a bonus I'll gladly take as I have a few DVD-A's in my collection as well. From everything I've read, this new Blu Ray player from Oppo will be able compete with many much more expensive Blu Ray machines, and as far as Blu Ray/SACD players are concerned it beats the heck out of the Denon which is off the scale in price. I've been on the waiting list at Oppo for a long time so I should be hearing from them soon. I can't wait to hear multi-channel DSD from this machine and see Blu Ray (at home) for the first time. WP

Got my invite and will be ordering tomorrow. I've been waiting for a long time. The price is still very reasonable.

Thanks for the comments! Warren, I hope you've had your invitation from Oppo and will be able to tryout the player's SACD and DVD-A capabilities.
Greg, you're a lucky man and I agree, if the quality is as we expect, then the price is acceptable. Be sure to let us know what you think!

I've had mine for about 2 weeks now and am totally satisfied. It plays virtually anything, even .mkv avchd divx mpeg files and so on. It has quite a few set up options too and loads faster than any other player I've seen. It's high in price compared to some players but low compared to others (Denon). I would highly recommend it.

Long time Oppo fan, but I think this unit is dead in the water priced at $599. I can easily get the great universal audio from a used DV-980H for $100 and then Blu Ray video/audio from a cheap $150 player. That's $250 total. Asking a $350 premium to get all of that in one box is going to cause a lot of people to think twice about it.
