Harman Kardon Enter Blu-ray Market

Posted by Andy Boxall

BDP83 Harman/Kardon is ready to take its first step into the world of Blu-ray with the announcement of the BDP-10, their first Blu-ray player.  We're going to be seeing the BDP-10 in Europe during May, with the USA to follow, and it will be wearing a hefty 700 Euro or $940 price tag!  That's a pretty serious amount of money for a Blu-ray player these days, so what do we get for it?

The sleek BDP-83 is BD-Live and Bonus View enabled, has a USB port for your music and pictures, upscaling for DVDs, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD decoding and has a 1080/24p resolution.  Connectivity-wise, there's a v1.3 HDMI, coax and optical outputs, two-channel analogue audio sockets and an Ethernet connection too.

To us, those specifications perhaps don't live up to the expectations created by a nigh-on $1000 ticket, but H/K are well-known for making high-quality components so the extra cash may be waiting to be found in the sound and picture.  However, with the Oppo BDP-83 round the corner offering more for less, H/K may have to initially rely on their many brand-loyal clients to pick the BDP-10 off the shelves.
