Confusion Reigns as Watchmen Blu-ray Release is Updated
The Watchmen was a hit in the cinema and is an anticipated Blu-ray release, which most thought was confirmed and ready to go. We covered the release a while back, when everything seemed clear, however this week, Paramount (who distributed the movie in Europe) have issued confirmation of the July 27th UK release date for the Blu-ray and DVD, further stating it will be ONLY the theatrical cut featured across both formats.
In an effort to appease European Watchmen fans, there may be some extra bonus content exclusive to the release, but details are very sketchy, with too much confusion to currently say what this content may be. Regardless of this, anyone in Europe will have to import the US disc if they want to see the 'more violent and sexier' cut of the movie. With all Warner Bros. (the US distributor) discs being region free so far, this shouldn't be an issue, but the question is: why? We have to presume it's licensing issues between the different releasing studios, making it the customer who suffers through no fault of their own.
So, with European Watchmen fans heading for at least a triple dip - the theatrical, an imported director's cut and presumably, the future rumoured 'Ultimate Cut' - if they want to see everything available, US Watchmen fans have a dilemma, especially if you're partial to expensive limited edition sets, as Amazon have teased with a picture of their exclusive Nite Owl Ship Blu-ray edition. Unfortunately for our wallets, we at Blurayfreak fall into that category, and think this looks very nice indeed!
So which version will you choose? DVD, Blu-ray, an import director's cut, the Blu-ray with the PS3 game, this Nite Owl Ship, all of the above or simply wait for the final, ultimate cut? One thing's for sure, this is way too much choice for one film!
