New 20th Anniversary Goodfellas Blu-ray for 2010

Posted by Andy Boxall

Goodfellas We already have the chance to purchase the classic Scorsese gangster movie on Blu-ray, but Warner Bros. have now announced their plans to introduce a second edition.  They will be packaging the film inside one of their book-style cases - the same as the theatrical Natural Born Killers for example - and it will commemorate the film's 20th Anniversary.

As with other book releases, there will be a 34-page booklet inside while on the disc you'll find the following extras:

  • Martin Scorsese commentary track where he is joined by various cast and crew including Ray Liotta, Paul Sorvino and Nicholas Pileggi.
  • Henry Hill and FBI Agent Edward McDonald commentary.
  • Getting Made, Made Men and The Workaday Gangster making-of documentaries.

The above are all to be found on the two-disc Special Edition DVD and the recent Blu-ray. They will be joined by:

  • Public Enemies: The Golden Age of the Gangster Film documentary.
  • Four Warner Bros. mob-themed cartoons.
These are the new additions currently listed for this release.  Public Enemies: The Golden Age of the Gangster Film is Constantine Nasr's documentary covering the genre from silent to modern era, complete with interviews and plenty of clips.  It does pay special attention to Warner Bros. output, but seeing as they're responsible for many of the best, this is no bad thing.  It runs 106 minutes and is narrated by Alec Baldwin.

The documentary itself is already available separately and interestingly, the disc has four mob-themed cartoons as extras.  Does this mean the documentary and the cartoons will be included as a bonus DVD, repeating the existing version?  We presume this will be the case.  It would be good to see some information on any picture or sound improvements over the current package, but none has been forthcoming as yet.

The 20th Anniversary Edition of Goodfellas will be on sale on the 16th February 2010.
