Avatar Coming to Blu-ray, Sooner Than You Think! *Updated*

Posted by Andy Boxall

Avatar Big bad James Cameron just couldn't help but spill the beans on the home release of his sci-fi epic, Avatar, when speaking to the Wall Street Journal this week.  As expected, the film will have a staggered release, with the standard and according to Cameron, bare-bones, release hitting the shelves on the 22nd April, followed by a Special Edition DVD and 3D Blu-ray in November.

Although this comes from the director himself, Fox would not confirm the quoted release dates.  We also wonder whether the initial April release will be the rumoured director's cut, or whether that will be saved for the later Special Editions.

So, will you be rushing out to buy Avatar on its first go round, or will you wait until November to buy the full-on release?  Or perhaps you are a massive fan and will be getting both?  There is no doubt that the Blu-ray of the movie will look amazing, and if I do purchase one, I would prefer to pay the $30 the standard Blu-ray will likely cost, rather than the $3000 a 3D set up would probably cost me in November!

UPDATE:

Although Fox have not confirmed or denied the April release date of a 2D Avatar, they have spoken out about the November release of the 3D verison.  Here's what they said:

"3-D is in the conceptual stage and Avatar will not be out on 3-D Blu-ray in November."

Fair enough, but to not have the 3D version of the highest grossing film ever made out by Christmas, a year after its theatrical run, seems highly unlikely to us!
