3D Week: Cameron Talks Titanic 3D and Avatar Re-release
While speaking to USA Today after filming a Samsung 3D event - and yes, he did film in 3D - the director of Avatar talked about a number of interesting subjects. Towards the end of the interview, he told the newspaper that the former 'biggest movie ever', Titanic was going to receive a 3D makeover and a re-release in time for the 2012 100th anniversary of the voyage.
This was followed by a question regarding the 3D Blu-ray release of Avatar. Instead of repeating what we had already heard - a possible November date - Cameron said there was a chance Avatar would be re-released theatrically with the possibility of inserting additional footage and 'doing something creative'. This would push the 3D Blu-ray back, however we can't see it being pushed past the end of the year. We also wonder how this would play out against the next big sci-fi 3D release, Tron Legacy, due out mid-December, too.
His reason for a wanting a re-release is that Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland 3D 'stomped Avatar out of theaters'. So, holding the number one spot for all-time domestic and worldwide grosses, now totaling well in excess of $2billion, ten consecutive weekends at number one in the USA and more than 17 weeks at number one in the UK is getting stomped on? His definition is clearly different to ours.
