3D Week: PlayStation 3D?

Posted by Andy Boxall

PS3slim If you're a PlayStation 3 owner and like the idea of home 3D content, then you're in the best position to do so, as Sony will be making your console 3D compatible via a firmware update.  Likely to coincide with the release of their 3D TVs, Sony is rumoured to be sending out the 3.20 firmware update on the 10th June.  This will be the first of two 3D PS3 updates, the first containing gaming support and the second for 3D Blu-ray movie playback.

While this is being heavily promoted by Sony, in reality it will only save you the price of a new 3D-ready Blu-ray player, as you'll still need a 3D TV, transmitter and a pair of glasses to play.  While this saving is welcome, it's hardly the bulk of the investment needed to go 3D this year.

Then there is the question of 3D games.  The situation is similar to that of 3D movies, with few firm details to go on at this stage.  Visitors to trade shows or Sony Experience centres may have had the chance to try out WipEout HD, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, Gran Turismo 5: Prologue and the mainstay of 3D demos, Super Stardust HD, but as for anything confirmed as full 3D future titles, the list is empty.

There are two titles on sale which contain 3D sections, if not full gameplay, though.  Unsurprisingly, Avatar is one and soon the Game of the Year edition of Batman: Arkham Asylum will join it, but only Killzone 3 has been rumoured in connection with a 3D release in the future.  Sony do say they will have 'a good range of content' at the time of launch, but what and when this will be is unconfirmed.

Am I wrong or aren't a lot of games already being rendered in 3D. I have been playing some of the same games on a PC in 3D. Your playstation sees your game in three dimensions just like a PC does. We just need am update to work with the glasses.
