Apocalypse Now Blu-ray Details Arrive

Posted by Andy Boxall

Apocnow1 No doubt you were as excited as we were on the news that Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now was set to receive two Blu-ray editions in October, and while we speculated about the bonus contents of these new discs, there was no official announcement made at the time.  Now though, IGN have stepped up and given us not only the complete run down of features, but a look at the cover art too!

As you'll remember, Apocalypse Now will be packaged with Redux in a two-disc set, while The Full Disclosure Edition will add the Hearts of Darkness documentary on a third disc.

Two-Disc Edition:

  • Apocalypse Now Theatrical Cut and Redux.
  • A Conversation with Martin Sheen.
  • An Interview with John Milius.
  • Complete Francis Ford Coppola interview with Roger Ebert from Cannes 2001.
  • Monkey Sampan scene.
  • Additional scenes.
  • Destruction of the Kurtz Compound end credits sequence, with commentary track.
  • The Hollow Men.  Video showing Marlon Brando reading T.S. Eliot's poem.
  • The Birth of 5.1 featurette.
  • Ghost Helicopter Flyover sound demo.
  • A Million Feet of Film: The Editing of Apocalypse Now featurette.
  • The Music of Apocalypse Now featurette.
  • The Synthesizer Soundtrack article.
  • Heard Any Good Movies Lately? The Sound Design of Apocalypse Now featurette.
  • The Final Mix featurette.
  • Apocalypse Then and Now featurette.
  • The Color Palette featurette.
  • PBR Streetgang featurette.

Full Disclosure Edition:

All the above features plus the following:

  • Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse.
  • Commentary on Hearts of Darkness with Eleanor and Francis Ford Coppola.
  • 48-page collectible booklet.
  • John Milius script excerpt with notes by Coppola.
  • Storyboard gallery.
  • Photo gallery.
  • Marketing Archive.

As expected, all the features found on the Complete Dossier DVD are present, with the addition of the galleries, archives and script excerpt found on the Full Disclosure Blu-ray set, which are exclusive to this set.  It's strange then, that the above list doesn't mention the audio commentary found on both the Complete Dossier and the UK's steelbook release.  Perhaps this will be added prior to release, but if it's not, then we still don't have the definitive edition of the film and collectors will need to hang on to their DVDs if they want to have access to all the features released so far.

Both editions are scheduled for release on the 19th October and will cost $39.99 for the two-disc and $59.99 for the three-disc.  Both versions of the film will be presented in the original 2.35:1 aspect ratio and Hearts of Darkness will be in 1080p.
