Back to the Future Blu-ray Trilogy Release Roundup!

Posted by Andy Boxall

BTTFblu It's certain to be one of the biggest Blu-ray releases of the year, and is undoubtedly one of the most requested by Blu-ray fans since the format's debut.  Back to the Future is going to be released on the 25th October in the UK, followed by a US release the day after.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the much loved trilogy will have all the bonus features found on the previous DVD release, plus some brand new features created for the Blu-ray.  Here is the official line-up:

  • Tales from the Future:  A six-part retrospective documentary featuring interviews with Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Director Robert Zemeckis, Producers Bob Gale and Neil Canton, plus Executive Producer Steven Spielberg.  There are several parts to this documentary:
  • In the Beginning - The genesis.  A look at casting, re-casting, the DeLorean and the production.
  • Time to Go - Tales from the production of the first movie.
  • Keeping Time - The score and songs used in the trilogy.
  • Time Flies - Concentrating on the sequel and its futuristic look.
  • Third Time's the Charm - Concentrating on the third film.
  • The Test of Time - The cultural impact of the trilogy.
  • The Physics of Back To The Future - Physicist Dr. Michio Kaku talks about the science in the films.
  • Nuclear Test Site Ending -  Storyboards from the original end sequence.
  • 16 Deleted Scenes.
  • Michael J. Fox Q&A.
  • Q&A Commentaries with Director Robert Zemeckis and Producer Bob Gale.
  • Feature Commentaries with Producers Bob Gale and Neil Canton.
  • Original Featurettes:
  • Making the Trilogy: Chapters One, Two & Three
  • The Making Of Back to the Future Part I, II & III
  • The Secrets of the Back to the Future Trilogy
  • Back to the Future Night
  • Nine Behind-the-Scenes featurettes.
  • Back to the Future: The Ride
  • Huey Lewis and the News "Power of Love" Music Video
  • ZZ Top "DoubleBack" Music Video
  • Photo Galleries.
  • U-CONTROL, BD-Live and Pocket-BLU support.

The films have all been newly restored with DTS-HD audio too, and when speaking to back-to-the-future.net Producer Bob Gale had this to say about the transfer and the sound: 'The HD transfers for all three films are simply breath-taking, they actually look better than they did in the theater because of the incredible job that was done on dirt clean-up. (And the film grain is preserved, so they still look like movies should look.) And hearing the sound in full dynamic range is — okay, I’ll say it — a blast!'

Mr. Gale also confirmed that for the first time ever, we'll get to see original Marty McFly Eric Stoltz in three brief scenes!

The Back to the Future Trilogy is currently listed as a pre-order on the usual UK sites, with a price tag of £37.99 for the regular Digipack edition.  However, a Limited Edition Collector's set has also appeared with the following exclusive additions:

  • A DeLorean Blueprint.
  • An 'Outatime' number plate.
  • The Sports Almanac.
  • Save the Clocktower poster.
  • A lenticular picture of Marty's family.

According to the blurb 'much, much more' can be expected too, although whether they are referring to the bonus content or more collectibles, we're not sure.  This will all be presented in tin packaging of which we have no images yet, and is priced at £44.99 as a pre-order.

The Collector's edition will also be joined by a 'DeLorean Edition' box set, but details on this are even slimmer, as there is a lack of picture or release date!  There is speculation on this being similar to Terminator 4's moto-Terminator set or The Dark Knight's Bat-Pod edition though.

Which one will you be getting in October?
