New Avatar Special Edition Blu-ray Details Emerge

Posted by Andy Boxall

Avatar With the Special Edition of Avatar about to be released in the cinemas, James Cameron has been talking up the forthcoming Special Edition Blu-ray too, giving fans an idea of what to expect when it hits the shelves in November.

The new theatrical cut has an extra nine minutes of footage, but the Blu-ray will take that to sixteen minutes of unseen Avatar action!  For fans, this should be tempting enough, but the actual quote makes it even more interesting.  Cameron says the film will 'include a more expanded 'alternate reality version' that is 16 minutes longer than the original'.

This will bring Avatar to the three-hour mark and while it was quite long enough the first time around, an 'alternate reality version' does sound intriguing.  How will this be presented?  Will the new set include the original, Special Edition and Alternate Reality cuts, like the T2 disc?

We're still not entirely sure what the new footage contains either, although Cameron has said it's spread throughout the film and includes a death scene with 'some of the best CG we did for the movie', a hunt action scene and of course, the now infamous Na'Vi sex scene.

If you're still waiting for the home 3D version, be prepared for it to appear sometime in 2011, as the Avatar money-train is still running.
