And the Award Goes To... Blu-ray!

300_6952 When those Academy Award members get the oh so difficult task of awarding their Oscar to the next great film, they've had to do their homework.  For them, it means watching a whole pile of films to figure out a winner.  One of the perks of the job is that they get the movies by the boxload sent to them for viewing at their convenience.  I hadn't thought about the format of the disc viewed, but apparently change is underfoot as Blu-ray is starting to creep into DVD territory here:

Warner Bros. is making history once more, and the director of the studio's biggest film ever had a hand in it. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has sent out a mailer to Oscar voters stating they will now have the option to receive their Academy Award screener discs in either the standard format or in high-def Blu-ray.

Apparently, The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan, a huge BD supporter, had persuaded the studio to break new ground in this arena, which would likely benefit his film's Oscar chances greatly.

Hmm... so now they can get the film on Blu-ray if they wish.  Seems like most of them would make the no brainer choice of Blu-ray for its far superior format.  Then again, with some of their picks for the Oscars, we'll have to see how this shakes out.

The first five Harry Potter movies and Blade Runner will be released on Blu-ray and HD DVD discs in the fourth quarter of 2007. The news was announced by Warner earlier this week.

The retail price for all five Harry Potter movies will be $149.99, a $30 premium over the standard DVD versions. No pricing information has been made available for Blade Runner.

Let's just hope that these movies are not delayed and that they will be under the tree next Christmas.
